Burgundy Red: The Ouseburn Edit

Sometimes the colour is the outfit. Find out how I styled burgundy red in the heart of Ouseburn.

Ouseburn has officially become one of my favourite corners of Newcastle. Over the years, it’s become one of the most creative and trendy parts of the city, brimming with independent cafés, street murals, markets, music venues, and art studios. Every nook reveals a new layer of personality and colour, and now that the weather is finally brightening up, the whole area feels more vibrant than ever.

So, it felt only right to mirror some of this vibrancy in my wardrobe. Here’s how I styled a look for a lovely day out in the Ouseburn Valley.

Polka Dots & Wine Tones

I’ve always found that the best outfits are the ones that feel like an extension of the place you're walking through: a lemon tiled dress in Greece, a chic maxi at a country house, and now, a rich merlot leather in the heart of colourful Ouseburn.

Red has undeniably been the ‘it’ shade over the past few summers, with bright cherry red becoming a staple in almost everyone's wardrobe. And while I think red is the perfect colour for spring and summer, I’ve found myself leaning toward a tone that’s a little more muted. It turns out, burgundy isn’t just for the winter.

The Palette

I stumbled upon this leather jacket in Urban Outfitters recently, and the colour – a gorgeous, wine-stained burgundy – instantly caught my eye. I initially went in looking for a classic black leather jacket, but that plan went straight out the window the second I saw the maroon. I don’t usually wear a lot of red, but this particular shade has a depth to it that feels more like an elevated neutral.

It felt perfectly at home in Ouseburn, too. Amongst the colourful wall art and the weathered black timber of the old warehouse doors, the jacket provided a beautiful, moody contrast against the industrial setting.

The Edit

Since the jacket was the undisputed star of the show, I paired it with a simple polka-dot top and dark denim jeans to act as a neutral base for that deep maroon. For accessories, I leaned into this neutral palette with a:

Black belt
Cream handbag
Pair of white Spezials

These pieces helped to keep the look balanced and cohesive. I added a cute detail with my maroon flower clip, and to tie the whole look together, I wore my burgundy-tinted sunglasses. These proved to be the perfect complementary piece to the jacket’s wine tone.

It feels almost necessary to have a statement piece like this jacket in your rotation. Sometimes, the colour is the outfit. It adds a layer of interest and a bit of glamour without feeling like you're trying too hard. And in a place like Ouseburn, where colour speaks volumes, I could just let the jacket speak for itself.
