Federal: One of Manchester’s Best Brunch Spots

From simple, fresh ingredients to standout flavours, here’s why Federal remains a Manchester favourite.

I’m easily convinced when it comes to brunch. In fact, mention coffee and I’m already on my way. There’s just something about a slow morning with good food and a proper cuppa that makes brunch one of life’s simple pleasures.

Now, with so many brunch options on the market, the hardest part is choosing where to get your morning fix. From photogenic pancakes to the latest viral matcha, brunch culture moves quickly, and it’s easy to try somewhere once and move on. A rarity is finding somewhere you actually want to keep going back to.

That place for me is Federal Cafe.

Federal Cafe, Manchester

Federal started in 2014 as a small neighbourhood café in Manchester’s Northern Quarter with a pretty simple idea: create a space where people leave feeling better than when they walked in. The venue is inspired by the relaxed café culture of Australia and New Zealand – laid‑back, friendly, and focused on serving really good coffee and breakfast.

It's clear that they’ve stayed true to that ethos. Every time I’m in Manchester, making my way to Federal Cafe has become something of a ritual. Having just made my third visit, I can wholeheartedly say it might just be my favourite brunch spot in the city.

And I’m clearly not the only one who feels this way, as over the years, Federal has quietly woven itself into Manchester’s fabric. What began in the Northern Quarter has steadily expanded to Deansgate and Oxford Road’s Circle Square, alongside a coffee cart in Altrincham. Most recently, the brand has stepped beyond Manchester, opening a new venue in Leeds in December – a natural next chapter for a café that’s grown well beyond its original postcode.

The Experience

If you weren’t already in the know, Federal could easily be mistaken for just another neighbourhood café – if not for the long line of people spilling out the door. In a city like Manchester, where brunch venues are never in short supply, you’d be forgiven for wondering why anyone would queue when there are countless alternatives nearby.

From experience, it all comes down to quality and consistency. Federal is a place that delivers both good food and good coffee, every single time. At a lot of places, one is usually sacrificed for the other, but here, neither is compromised. Another guarantee is the friendly service – warm, attentive staff who make you feel at home as soon as you arrive.

Somehow, the queue itself is almost part of the ritual – a quiet reassurance that you’ve chosen well. But the wait itself never lasts long, as you’re always welcomed with a smile, handed a menu, and you can even sip your coffee while you wait.

The Menu

At Federal, the attention to detail starts long before the plates reach the table. Ingredients are carefully sourced from sustainable, ethical, and, wherever possible, independent farms, roasteries, and suppliers. Everything is made in-house whenever they can, and quality is checked daily to ensure every dish meets their standards.

The menu itself has a lovely variety of dishes, whether you have a sweet tooth or prefer something savoury (perfect if, like me, choosing between the two feels like a life-or-death decision). Of course, there’s all the classics – eggs benedict, French toast, or even breakfast options such as porridge or acai bowls.

My personal favourite is the cheddar corn fritters from the All Day Brunch menu , which come stacked with bacon, poached eggs, sweet chilli, and lime sour cream. The flavours blend so perfectly together and the eggs are always cooked to perfection. If you visit, I would highly recommend trying these!

The Coffee

Federal use their own beans, making sure every cup gets the same care and attention as their food. They work only with suppliers who deal directly with growers and share their values. Every time I’ve visited the café, the quality and taste are consistent every time.

For me, it’s always a dilemma between a vanilla matcha or a rich, full-bodied coffee (they also do their viral iced matcha in signature cans). Either way, you can’t go wrong – and it’ll always be topped with beautiful latte art!

Federal also do a lovely cup of matcha.

Federal isn’t just a café that looks good on Instagram – everything on the menu is genuinely worth trying. The food is carefully prepared, the coffee consistently excellent, and the service aways warm and welcoming.

Federal delivers every time, and it’s not just the food or the coffee – it’s the care behind every plate and cup. That’s why Federal keeps people coming back.

Give it a try. It’s well worth the wait.
